What happened in the Lansing Community College data breach?

Lansing Community College reported a data breach involving unauthorized access to certain systems in its network environment, which it discovered on February 18, 2025; its investigation found that an unauthorized actor had gained access around February 12, 2025 through a credential compromise. According to LCC’s notice, the affected systems contained information related to some individuals, with the data varying by person and potentially including names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license information, and other information provided to or maintained by the college. After discovering the incident, the college said it worked with outside cybersecurity specialists to secure and remediate its systems, investigated the scope of the access, identified potentially affected individuals, notified law enforcement, and planned regulatory notifications where required. LCC also offered eligible individuals 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services, including credit monitoring, dark web monitoring, credit-freeze assistance, change-of-address monitoring, and identity restoration support.
