What happened in the AssuranceAmerica data breach?
AssuranceAmerica Managing General Agency, LLC recently disclosed a data security incident involving unauthorized access to certain company information technology systems. According to the notice, AssuranceAmerica detected suspicious activity on March 17, 2026, and determined that the activity appeared to stem from malicious activity on March 16, 2026, targeting one of the company’s employees. AssuranceAmerica stated that it began investigating promptly, retained outside computer forensic specialists, and later found that an unauthorized third party had accessed its IT systems and copied a number of data files. The company then reviewed the affected files to determine whose personal information may have been included.
The AssuranceAmerica data breach may have involved names along with one or more types of personal, insurance, driver, vehicle, claims, tax, or identification information. The affected data may have included contact information, automobile insurance policy or account information, driver or vehicle information, claims-related information, driver’s license numbers, Tax ID information, and Social Security numbers. South Carolina has reported that 611,046 of its residents were affected. AssuranceAmerica said it disabled and took offline affected server devices, reset passwords, deployed enhanced monitoring and threat detection software, provided additional cybersecurity instruction to personnel, and notified law enforcement. The notice also advises affected individuals to review credit reports, bank accounts, and other financial statements for suspicious activity; the California notice form states that AssuranceAmerica is offering 12 months of complimentary IDX credit monitoring, though the enrollment deadline is left blank in the sample notice.

What should affected individuals do?
Individuals affected by the AssuranceAmerica data breach should carefully review their notice letter and determine what information may have been involved. Because the exposed information may have included names, contact information, automobile insurance policy or account information, driver or vehicle information, claims-related information, driver’s license numbers, Tax ID information, and Social Security numbers, affected individuals should watch for signs of identity theft, insurance fraud, tax fraud, and targeted phishing. They should also consider enrolling in the complimentary IDX credit monitoring service offered by AssuranceAmerica, if they are eligible and the enrollment deadline has not passed.
Affected individuals should monitor their credit reports, bank accounts, insurance accounts, and other financial statements for suspicious activity. They may also consider placing a free credit freeze or fraud alert with the major credit bureaus, especially if their Social Security number, Tax ID number, or driver’s license number was involved. If suspicious activity appears, they should promptly contact the relevant financial institution, insurer, credit bureau, or government agency, and consider filing a report through IdentityTheft.gov. Individuals whose Social Security number or Tax ID information was exposed may also want to consider requesting an IRS Identity Protection PIN to help reduce the risk of tax-related identity theft.
Stay alert for insurance-related fraud or impersonation.
Because the breach may have involved auto insurance policy/account data, driver/vehicle information, and claims-related information, scammers could potentially craft more believable messages pretending to be an insurer, agent, claims representative, repair shop, or government office. The NAIC notes that identity theft can involve insurance-related information and can contribute to fraudulent insurance claims or damaged consumer profiles.
