Data Breach Class Action Lawsuit

Posted: August 13, 2024 -- Attention, victims of the Kootenai Health data breach.

Abington Cole + Ellery is investigating the data breach recently announced by Kootenai Health.

Kootenai Health data breach summary:

Approximately 464,000 individuals were affected by the Kootenai Health data breach.

Breached data may include, but is not necessarily limited to: names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, driver’s license data, government-issued identification data, medical record data, medication data, medical treatment data, medical condition data, medical diagnoses data, and health insurance data.

On or about March 2, 2024, Kootenai Health identified unauthorized activity that was disrupting the availability of part of its IT systems. Kootenai Health claims it immediately took actions toward ensuring the security of its digital environment and brought in leading cybersecurity experts to investigate and determine if any personal information had been accessed or taken without permission.

The investigation concluded that an unauthorized individual may have had access to certain data of the Kootenai Health network on or about February 22, 2024. The impacted data was carefully reviewed to determine if personal or protected health information was involved. They also worked to confirm the accuracy of the contact information for the individuals impacted. This review was completed on August 1, 2024.

After discovery of the incident, further security measures were added by Kootenai Health to reduce the probability of a similar event occurring in the future, and reported the breach to the FBI.

As a result of the data breach, Kootenai Health is offering 12 months of free credit monitoring and/or identity theft protection services to some affected individuals.
