Posted: July 17, 2024 -- Attention, victims of the First Choice Dental data breach.
Abington Cole + Ellery is investigating the data breach recently announced by First Choice Dental.
First Choice Dental data breach summary:
Approximately 228,000 individuals were affected by the First Choice Dental data breach.
Breached data may include, but is not necessarily limited to: names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, health data, driver’s license data, passport data, government identification data, payment card data, and/or financial account data.
On October 22, 2023, First Choice Dental detected a ransomware incident on its network, where an unauthorized actor accessed First Choice Dental's network, encrypted some data, and demanded a ransom payment. Upon discovering this breach, First Choice Dental claims to have immediately disconnected its network and enlisted cybersecurity experts to secure the network and conduct a forensic investigation.
According to First Choice Dental, the forensic investigation revealed that the unauthorized actor had accessed certain files. In response, First Choice Dental claims it conducted a thorough review of the affected files to identify and notify individuals whose personal information might have been compromised. Following the event, First Choice Dental claims it quickly implemented several security measures, including new intrusion detection and response tools, enhanced data backup systems, upgraded firewall, additional multi-factor authentication requirements, password resets, and strengthened network access policies.
By May 2024, First Choice Dental finished its review of the data and started preparing to mail personalized notification letters to individuals whose personal data might have been part of the cybersecurity event.
As a result of the data breach, First Choice Dental is offering 12 months of free credit monitoring and/or identity theft protection services to some affected individuals.
