Capital Star Oil & Gas Data Breach Details:
Capital Star Oil & Gas, Inc., a Houston-based independent oil and gas exploration company, detected unusual activity on its computer network on November 3, 2025. The firm says it immediately began an internal investigation and hired external cybersecurity experts to help analyze the situation. Through this review, they confirmed unauthorized access to specific files, and a thorough examination of the affected data—lasting several months—concluded on March 9, 2026, revealing that personal information of certain individuals had likely been compromised.
The exposed data primarily included individuals' full names along with their Social Security numbers. While the letter does not specify the exact method of entry beyond the initial detection of suspicious network behavior, public reports from late 2025 indicate the company was targeted in a ransomware-style attack around December 2, 2025, which may relate to or stem from the same underlying events.
Following the discovery, Capital Star Oil & Gas says it strengthened its network defenses to help prevent future occurrences. The company is offering impacted individuals 12 months of complimentary single-bureau credit monitoring, credit reports, credit scores, and proactive fraud resolution assistance through Cyberscout (a TransUnion service).
