Barnhart Crane & Rigging Company Data Breach Details:

Barnhart Crane & Rigging Company, Inc. recently disclosed a data security incident involving parts of its network environment. The company said certain systems were affected during a short window between April 23 and April 24, 2025. After learning of the issue, Barnhart began an investigation and brought in outside cybersecurity professionals. The public notice does not say exactly how the intruder got in. It does not identify the attacker, the malware used, or the first point of entry. It says only that there was unauthorized activity in the company’s systems.

The investigation later found that some files may have been accessed or taken. Barnhart said it discovered this on April 21, 2026, nearly one year after the network activity. The exposed information may have included names together with sensitive data such as Social Security numbers, driver’s license or state ID numbers, passport numbers, financial account information, dates of birth, health information, and insurance information. A Maine Attorney General breach filing lists 22,822 people affected.

There is also outside threat-intelligence reporting that a ransomware actor listed Barnhart Crane & Rigging in June 2025 and claimed a leak size of about 360 GB. That claim helps explain the likely shape of the event, but it should be treated as leak-site intelligence unless confirmed by Barnhart or a regulator. Barnhart’s own notice does not state that ransomware was used, does not confirm a ransom demand, and does not say whether files were publicly leaked. The company said it was not aware of identity theft or fraud directly tied to the incident at the time of notice, and it offered credit monitoring to people whose Social Security numbers were involved.
