On January 18, 2024, Weirton Medical Center detected unusual activities within its computer networks. In response, immediate actions were taken to protect the integrity of its computer systems, and an in-depth investigation was initiated, supported by external forensic experts. This investigation revealed that from January 14 to January 18, 2024, an unidentified entity had accessed and extracted files from specific systems within Weirton Medical Center's network.
An examination of the compromised files was conducted to ascertain the nature of the information they contained and the individuals it pertained to. By March 6, 2024, this exhaustive evaluation was concluded, confirming that the files included data related to certain current and former patients. Following the discovery of this breach, Weirton Medical Center claims it swiftly implemented measures to fortify its systems and initiated a comprehensive probe with the help of specialized forensic teams.
To prevent future occurrences, Weirton Medical Center has since enhanced its security protocols. Furthermore, the incident was reported to federal law enforcement and regulatory bodies, including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, ensuring compliance and cooperation in the matter.

Approximately 26,700 individuals were affected by the Weirton Medical Center data breach.
