Attention: Washington Auditor data breach victims.
February 24, 2021, Abington Cole + Ellery is investigating the confirmed (and massive) data breach of certain Washington State Auditor information by an unauthorized individual or individuals who took advantage of a weakness in the Washington Auditor's third-party data transfer service Accellion. The information Accellion identified as being part of the data breach included personal information of those persons who filed claims in 2020 for unemployment benefits with the Washington Employment Security Department.
Breached data may include, but is not necessarily limited to: name, social security number and/or driver’s license or state identification number, bank account information, date of birth and place of employment for people who filed for unemployment claims from Jan. 1 to Dec. 10, 2020; information possessed by the Washington State Department of Children, Youth and Families.
According to the Washington Auditor, it was first confirmed on January 25, 2021, that information in its possession was subject to the data breach. The Washington Auditor is conducting an investigation and is in the process of notifying victims of the data breach. UPDATE: According to the Washington Policy Center, approximately 1.3 million Washingtonians will be notified that they were part of the data breach.
