Data Breach Class Action

September 21, 2023 -- Attention: victims of the Lakeland Community College data breach.

Between March 7 and March 31 of 2023, unauthorized computer network access was identified by Lakeland Community College. In response to this data breach, Lakeland Community College promptly initiated an examination of its computer network environment. As part of this examination, Lakeland Community College consulted external experts in cybersecurity who are experienced in assessing such incidents. The investigation reached its conclusion on August 20, 2023, revealing that personal data had been exfiltrated from the network during the data breach.

To mitigate risks caused by the data breach, written notices were sent by Lakeland Community College starting around September 19, 2023, to all potentially affected parties. The notification outlines various measures that individuals can undertake to enhance their personal security. These precautions include, but are not limited to, the option to enroll in free credit monitoring services —- if Social Security numbers were affected —- as well as suggesting the implementation of fraud alerts or security freezes on credit files. The notice also recommends that individuals obtain complimentary credit reports, remain vigilant in scrutinizing their financial statements and credit reports for any unauthorized or unusual activities, and take proactive steps to defend against potential medical identity theft.

Approximately 285,900 individuals were affected by the Lakeland Community College data breach.

Breached data may include, but is not necessarily limited to: Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers or state identification numbers, dates of birth, passport numbers, credit or debit card data, financial account data, health insurance policy data, and/or medical data.
