Data Breach Class Action Lawsuit

December 13, 2023 -- Attention: victims of the Harrisburg Medical Center data breach.

Abington Cole + Ellery is investigating the recently announced Harrisburg Medical Center data breach.

Harrisburg Medical Center recently suffered a data breach in its computer systems. Harrisburg Medical Center detected unusual network activity around December 23, 2022, which led to the initiation of an internal investigation. To aid in this process, Harrisburg Medical Center enlisted a forensic security firm and cooperated with law enforcement agencies. This collaboration enabled a thorough examination, revealing that from December 19 to December 23, 2022, an unidentified entity had infiltrated Harrisburg Medical Center's computer systems. It was determined that this entity potentially accessed and obtained specific documents during the breach.

In response to this incident, Harrisburg Medical Center has implemented several measures to mitigate the risk of future breaches. These include bolstering its technical security protocols to better safeguard its computer systems against similar attacks.

As a result of the data breach, Harrisburg Medical Center is offering 12 months of free credit monitoring and/or identity theft protection services to affected individuals.

Approximately 147,800 individuals were affected by the Harrisburg Medical Center data breach.

Breached data may include, but is not necessarily limited to: name, clinical data, date of birth, diagnosis/conditions, digital/electronic signature, driver’s license/state ID number, financial account information, health insurance data, lab results, prescription data, and/or Social Security number.

Harrisburg Medical Center is a community hospital with 71 beds, operating as a non-profit organization under the 501(c)(3) classification. It serves a regional population across six counties in southeastern Illinois, including Saline, Gallatin, Hardin, Pope, White, and Williamson. The hospital employs over 450 staff members. Harrisburg Medical Center is notable for providing the only inpatient behavioral health program available in the southernmost 16 counties of Illinois. Its range of services encompasses primary care, behavioral health, inpatient and surgical care, as well as various ancillary services such as radiology and laboratory work. Additionally, Harrisburg Medical Center manages primary care and behavioral health clinics in Eldorado, Harrisburg, and Marion, a surgical services clinic, and two clinics located at mining sites in Williamson and Hamilton counties.

In 2021, Harrisburg Medical Center initiated a process to become part of the Southern Illinois Healthcare system. This integration aims to enhance service collaboration and expansion within the community, facilitating access to a broader range of healthcare services locally. Southern Illinois Healthcare is a non-profit health system headquartered in Carbondale, Illinois. It includes three hospitals, a comprehensive cancer center, a Level II Trauma Center, and over 30 outpatient and specialty practices.

Since its establishment in 1965, Harrisburg Medical Center has focused on providing quality healthcare services in southeastern Illinois. The center's approach is grounded in community engagement, with an emphasis on offering comprehensive medical procedures and services akin to those found in larger hospitals, but within a local setting.
