Egyptian Health Department
Data Breach Class Action Lawsuit

February 26, 2024 -- Attention: victims of the Egyptian Health Department data breach.

Abington Cole + Ellery is investigating the recently announced Egyptian Health Department data breach.

On December 21, 2023, Egyptian Health Department experienced a cybersecurity breach. Following the detection of this breach, Egyptian Health Department immediately hired a cybersecurity firm with specialized expertise to carry out a thorough forensic analysis aimed at understanding the extent and details of the breach. This investigation is still in progress. However, it has been determined that unauthorized access was gained to some of Egyptian Health Department's folders. These folders contained sensitive information related to employees and clients/patients.

In an effort to maintain transparency and caution, Egyptian Health Department is preparing to inform individuals who may have been affected. The identification of these individuals is underway, and they will be notified through postal mail. Egyptian Health Department will also provide them with credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.

In response to the breach, Egyptian Health Department has implemented several security measures to prevent future incidents. These measures include the engagement of a cybersecurity firm and IT experts to further investigate the breach and assess its impact. Additional security enhancements have been made, such as the establishment of new domain controllers, relocation of SMB network shares to a dedicated virtual machine, conducting permission audits on shared folders, and restricting Sharepoint Server access to internal use only. Moreover, all user credentials have been reset, and programs that require inbound connections have been moved to separate virtual machines. Security software like Sentinel One and Huntress has been installed on all devices, access to Domain Admin rights has been restricted, and password protection has been added to spreadsheets containing Protected Health Information (PHI).

As a result of the data breach, Egyptian Health Department is offering free credit monitoring and/or identity theft protection services to affected individuals.

Approximately 100,000 individuals were affected by the Egyptian Health Department data breach.

Breached data may include, but is not necessarily limited to: names, dates of birth, social security numbers, drivers’ license numbers or other government-issued ID, financial account data, insurance data, medical data, and/or health insurance claims data.
