January 24, 2024 -- Attention: victims of the Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeons data breach.

Abington Cole + Ellery is investigating the recently announced Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeons data breach.

On February 17, 2023, Des Moines Orthopaedic Surgeons (“DMOS”) encountered a security breach in their network, instigated by an external unauthorized party. This intrusion led to the potential access and extraction of certain DMOS files, due to a lapse in a DMOS vendor's services. Following the detection of this breach, DMOS swiftly neutralized the threat and initiated a comprehensive investigation. To assist in this endeavor, DMOS enlisted the expertise of external cybersecurity experts, skilled in scrutinizing such breaches, to ascertain the full impact on the DMOS network's data integrity. Concurrently, DMOS informed law enforcement and transitioned to a different cybersecurity provider to bolster their network's defense.

The investigation involved an extensive evaluation of the incident's magnitude and its impact on data confidentiality. It was aimed at identifying the specific data that might have been exposed to unauthorized access. On December 6, 2023, it was established that among the compromised data were personal and health information contained within DMOS's documents and records. DMOS has undertaken the responsibility of notifying all potentially affected individuals. To achieve this, DMOS dispatched postal notifications to everyone whose contact information was available, with these notifications sent out on January 22, 2024.
