February 27, 2024 -- Attention: victims of the Aspen Group data breach.

Abington Cole + Ellery is investigating the recently announced Aspen Group / Aspen Dental (herein after "Aspen") data breach.

On April 25, 2023, Aspen was targeted by a ransomware attack that compromised its computer systems. In response, the company immediately engaged computer forensic specialists to investigate the extent of the breach and to facilitate the recovery of its computer operations.

Following a thorough examination of the files extracted from Aspen's network, the company recognized on December 11, 2023, the possibility that personal data might have been accessed without authorization. Aspen has since received confirmation that the documents in question are no longer in the possession of the unauthorized party.

To mitigate future risks, Aspen claims it has enhanced its network monitoring, upgraded access control measures, and strengthened the security of its computer systems.

As a result of the data breach, Aspen is offering 24 months of free credit monitoring and/or identity theft protection services to affected individuals.

Approximately 12,000 individuals were affected by the Aspen data breach.

Breached data may include, but is not necessarily limited to: Driver's License Number or Non-Driver Identification Card Number and/or other sensitive personal information.

Headquartered in East Syracuse, New York, Aspen operates within the healthcare industry, focusing primarily on dental services. Established to address a wide array of dental needs, the organization has expanded its footprint significantly across the United States. The network encompasses numerous independently owned and operated dental practices, providing a comprehensive suite of dental care services. These services range from preventive care and general dentistry to more specialized treatments such as cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics, and dental surgery. The model adopted by Aspen aims to facilitate access to dental care, especially in areas where there might be a scarcity of providers or services.

A key aspect of Aspen's operational model is its commitment to leveraging technology and innovation to enhance patient care and service delivery. This includes the use of advanced diagnostic tools, digital records management, and online booking systems to streamline operations and improve the patient experience. The organization places a strong emphasis on patient education, offering resources and guidance to help individuals make informed decisions about their dental health. This approach aligns with the broader objective of promoting oral health awareness and preventive care practices among the public.

Aspen's business model also emphasizes accessibility and convenience. Many of its locations offer extended hours and emergency services to accommodate patients with varying schedules and urgent needs. The company has made efforts to address financial barriers to dental care by providing a range of payment options and plans, including financing solutions and acceptance of multiple insurance providers. This strategy reflects the organization's goal to create a more inclusive and accessible dental care environment, striving for outcomes that are stable and durable for a broad spectrum of patients.
